When people talk about building wealth, they almost always start with the same checklist:
- Earn more
- Spend less
- Invest wisely
- Save for the future
And while those things matter, I learned something that blew that list wide open.
I learned that my mental health could be a wealth strategy all by itself — and that investing in it could pay me twice.
A Decade of Support
One of the most crucial things I did for myself when I started to seriously create a wealth strategy was to get a therapist.
We worked together for an entire decade. And we didn’t meet every single week for ten years — our rhythm was three months on, three months off, sometimes three months on, six months off. But during those “on” seasons, we went deep.
One particular three-month stretch changed everything.
The Strategy Session That Flipped My Thinking
I walked into that session ready. I had a list. I had goals. I had steps. And — I’ll admit — all of it was built on my old hustle culture mindset.
Work harder. Do more. Sleep later. Push through.
I thought my therapist would help me organize and refine it. Instead, she challenged me in a way I didn’t expect. We did personality tests, self-assessments, and exercises that helped her see exactly how I worked best.
And then she said it.
“Your wealth is tied to your rest.”
I thought, What? Who even says that?
It was such a foreign concept that I had to ask her to repeat it. And when she did, she said it with the kind of certainty that only comes from knowing you inside and out.
Borrowing Her Belief
By that point, we had been working together for over six years. She knew me — my patterns, my defaults, my strengths, and my struggles. So when she told me rest was my wealth strategy, she wasn’t guessing. She was sure.
Still, it was hard for me to believe.
I did what most people would do — I started researching it myself. Could rest really make me wealthier? Could I really slow down and still build the life I wanted?
And while I searched for answers, I did something even more important — I borrowed her belief.
She had seen this work before. She knew it could work for me. So I trusted her enough to try.
The Pushback at Home
Now, let me be real — my husband wasn’t sure about this at first.
Not because he didn’t believe in me, but because he had lived with Hustle Treshelle for years.
Up early. Up late. Always working on something. Always pushing for the next milestone.
This new version of me? The one who was intentionally resting, slowing down, and saying no to things? It was foreign to him — just like it was foreign to me.
We had to talk through it. We had to learn together what this could look like. And honestly, we both had moments where we wondered if I was making a mistake.
What Happened Next
But here’s the truth: once I embraced rest as a core part of my wealth strategy, everything started shifting.
- My nervous system began to heal — no more waking up every morning in fight-or-flight mode.
- My creativity came back — I could see opportunities more clearly.
- My decision-making improved — I made choices that built stability instead of chaos.
- My income grew — not because I worked more hours, but because the hours I did work were intentional, focused, and powerful.
It was the first time I understood that wealth wasn’t just about money. It was about the capacity to use and enjoy it.
Why This Paid Me Twice
When I say investing in my mental health paid me twice, I mean this:
- It paid me in my body. My energy, health, and peace became assets I could count on.
- It paid me in my bank account. I made better financial moves, attracted better opportunities, and built a sustainable way of earning that didn’t burn me out.
That’s the kind of ROI you can’t put a dollar sign on.
What I Want You to Know
You might be holding onto financial habits or mindsets that you think are “the way” because everyone says so. But if they’re wearing you down, depleting your energy, or making you dread the process, they may not be your way.
Sometimes the best wealth strategy isn’t another spreadsheet, side hustle, or late night.
Sometimes it’s therapy.
Sometimes it’s rest.
Sometimes it’s saying no to the pace everyone else insists is “normal.”
Soft Challenge
Take 5 minutes today and ask yourself: If my mental health was my #1 wealth strategy, what would I start doing — or stop doing — right now?
I’m still growing. I’m still learning. I’m still refining my rest-based strategy. But I can tell you this: slowing down didn’t cost me my goals — it gave me the capacity to reach them without losing myself in the process.
