Yes to Everyday Luxury

I was well into my 40s before I really understood what luxury meant.

Not because I hadn’t seen nice things.
Not because I hadn’t bought nice things.
I had a luxury car in my 30s.
I had taken luxury trips.

But I still hadn’t grasped what luxury truly was.

It wasn’t until I grew in awareness — and especially as I got closer to 50 — that I realized luxury is not just about things or places. Luxury is also a mindset. It’s deeply personal.

Redefining Luxury

I’ll be honest — part of my awakening came from TikTok.

I intentionally got on the app because I wanted to see what people were calling luxury. For me, it was a study. I grew up in a bubble. My mom did a good job keeping us cocooned from the outside world. That had its pros and cons, but one thing it did was make me hungry to understand perspectives outside of my own.

Scrolling through TikTok, I noticed something:

  • For some, luxury was just things — the car, the house, the handbag.
  • For others, luxury was basic access — running water in the home, a washer and dryer, reliable electricity.
  • For many, luxury was self-care — spa days, facials, little indulgences.

It opened my eyes. Luxury was relative. It depended on your story, your culture, your access. And it made me realize: if luxury can mean so many different things, then I get to define what everyday luxury looks like for me.

Curating My Yummy

That’s when I began to curate my own version of luxury — what I call my yummy.

Anything that lands in my “yummy space” is luxury to me. Not because of a price tag, but because of how it makes me feel.

One of my first everyday luxuries? Taco Tuesday.

At first, it was a simple dinner after a 9-to-5. But then I realized — I don’t want just a quick bite after work. I want lunch. I want to sit for hours in the middle of a Tuesday, eating good food with my girlfriends, laughing until our bellies hurt.

That felt luxurious.

Not just because of the tacos, but because I had the freedom, the finances, and the space to do it. And now, Taco Tuesday is a standing ritual in my life.

We’ve since added things like French Fry Friday and certain Sunday rituals. These small, intentional joys became big luxuries — not because they were expensive, but because they were consistent, chosen, and deliciously ours.

Everyday Luxuries in My Space

Another example: my mornings.

I used to wake up at 6 AM, rushing to get dressed, hurrying out the door, and running after someone else’s clock. Now, I allow myself a soft wake-up. No alarm screaming. No rushing. Just moving gently into my day. That’s luxury.

Or this: my dishware.

For years, my “luxury” plates came from Goodwill. And I loved them — I curated a set that brought me joy, piece by piece. But with my most recent move, I decided to donate them back to Goodwill so someone else could enjoy them.

This time, I invested in exactly the dishware I wanted. No settling. Now, every morning when I make breakfast, I get to use plates that feel beautiful and intentional. That’s everyday luxury, too.

The Lesson

Here’s what I realized:

Everyday luxury is about choice.

The world will always define luxury by price tags — the car, the resort, the handbag. And yes, those things can be wonderful. I still want them, too.

But there’s also the and.

You can have the luxury items and the everyday luxuries that are yours alone — the rituals, the rhythms, the little details that make you feel alive and cared for.

Everyday luxury is the moment you say yes to what your heart desires — not someday, not when you hit a certain milestone, but right now.

And when you do that, you stop postponing your joy. You start enjoying the journey.

Why Everyday Luxury Matters

So many people miss this. They think luxury is only at the end of the rainbow, when they can afford the big-ticket items.

But the truth is: when you find everyday luxuries, you don’t have to wait to enjoy your life.

  • Your tacos can be luxury.
  • Your dishware can be luxury.
  • Your slow mornings can be luxury.
  • Your laughter with friends can be luxury.

And when you live this way, wealth feels different. Life feels different. You start to see that the journey itself is the luxury.

Soft Challenge: Say Yes to Your Everyday Luxury

👉🏾 Choose one everyday luxury today and claim it.

It could be:

  • Upgrading your morning coffee ritual with a mug you love.
  • Taking an extra 30 minutes to enjoy lunch without your phone.
  • Buying fresh flowers just because.
  • Saying yes to Taco Tuesday (or French Fry Friday!) with your girlfriends.

Whatever makes you feel yummy, choose it. Live it. Enjoy it. That’s your everyday luxury.

Closing

I thought luxury was just about things. Cars. Trips. Hotels. But I’ve learned it’s so much more.

It’s the laughter around a lunch table on a Tuesday.
It’s the softness of waking up slow.
It’s the joy of eating off dishes that make you smile.

Luxury is personal. Luxury is daily. Luxury is saying yes to the things that make life delicious now.

And when you give yourself permission to live in everyday luxury, you’re not just waiting to arrive at wealth — you’re living it, one yes at a time.
