It was one of our yummy book club meetings—the kind that makes you want to pull your knees up on the couch, sip something warm, and just be. We hadn’t even cracked open the book yet; everyone was still coming in, finding their spots, settling in. You could hear the low hum of laughter, the clink of mugs being set on the table, and that soft shuffle of women who had carved out this sacred space just for us.
I was talking with one of the women I didn’t know that well—an acquaintance, maybe the start of a real friendship. We were in that pre-meeting conversation space, where everything is still light and open, and you can let your guard down just a little.
We got to talking about growth—the kind of growth that sneaks up on you in the quiet moments. She leaned in, her eyes soft but serious, and asked me a question that would stick to my bones:
“What if you would make more money if you understood that you flow better when you’re fully rested?”
The room felt like it got a little smaller. I blinked. I might have even laughed out of habit, because I didn’t know what else to do. Rest? As a pathway to more? For as long as I could remember, money came through grinding, pushing, stretching myself past every limit. It came from waking up early, staying up late, running on fumes, and sheer willpower. How could slowing down possibly create more of anything, let alone money?
But the question didn’t let go. It followed me home, lingering in the back of my mind like perfume—subtle, but undeniable. What if slowing down wasn’t about doing less—it was about doing better? What if resting wasn’t about being idle—it was about being ready? What if all this time, I was moving too fast to let abundance catch up to me?
I had to sit with it. I had to hold it up to the light and turn it around to see if it could possibly be true. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Because if there’s anything I’ve learned about money, it’s that it flows where there is ease. And I hadn’t been at ease in a long time.
The Lie of the Hustle
We live in a world that worships the hustle. It’s in every tagline, every social media post, every motivational speech. If you want more, you have to give more, do more, be more. So I did. I sacrificed sleep. I skipped rest. I carried heavy things—physical and emotional—because I thought it would get me closer to the life I wanted. But what if I was wrong?
What if, for some of us—Black women who have been carrying it all for generations—wealth was actually waiting for us to stop?
To breathe.
To rest.
To align.
And that’s what I started doing. Not perfectly, not all at once, but intentionally. I let myself sleep in a little longer. I let my mornings stretch out slowly, with tea and sunlight and music that made me feel like I was coming back to myself. I took my time with decisions. I embraced stillness instead of fighting it.
And you know what happened?
Money flowed easier.
Opportunities felt lighter.
My work felt less like work and more like rhythm.
I wasn’t grinding anymore. I was flowing. And the flow? It brought more abundance than any hustle ever did.
Slowing Down to Learn Yourself
I realized something profound during this shift: I had never given myself the permission to slow down long enough to learn me. Not just what I was good at, but what I thrived in. What made my spirit light up. What made me feel like I was living in the flow of my own purpose. I had been so busy trying to keep up with a world that never stopped moving that I hadn’t asked myself if the way I was moving was actually serving me.
Slowing down was more than just rest. It was discovery. It was aligning with the truth that my wealth was tied to my well-being. That I don’t just deserve abundance—I deserve it with ease.
That I’m allowed to pause.
That I’m allowed to receive.
That I’m allowed to create wealth in a way that doesn’t make me tired all the time.
Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is to stop. But maybe that’s exactly where the wealth is waiting.
Let’s Talk About It
I want to know—when was the last time you truly rested and watched your life align because of it? Drop it in the comments. Let’s talk about what happens when we stop hustling and start receiving.
Because Sis, your wealth is waiting. And it’s waiting in your rest.
