It’s Time to Break Into Wealth-Building Spaces We’ve Been Locked Out Of

Black woman in luxury and envisioning all the amazing things her life can be.

For too long, Black women have been excluded from wealth-building spaces like the stock market, real estate, and cryptocurrency. These opportunities have often felt out of reach—sometimes intentionally so.

But let me make this clear: We are not waiting for an invitation anymore. The days of being locked out are over. It’s time to step boldly into these spaces, claim our seat at the table, and secure our financial futures.

If you’ve ever felt intimidated, unsure, or even unwelcome in conversations about investing, know this—you’re not alone. Those feelings are rooted in systemic barriers designed to keep us out. But today, we’re tearing down those barriers and stepping into our rightful place in the wealth-building world.

A History of Exclusion

For generations, Black women have been systematically excluded from building wealth:

  • Redlining and Housing Discrimination: Our communities were often denied access to homeownership, a cornerstone of generational wealth.
  • Pay Inequality: Black women are paid less than others for the same work, which limits our ability to save and invest.
  • Financial Gatekeeping: From predatory lending to a lack of representation in financial institutions, we’ve faced roadblocks at every turn.

Despite these obstacles, we’ve always found ways to thrive. Now imagine what’s possible when we have full access to the resources and opportunities designed to create wealth.

Why Investing is the Key

Investing isn’t just about building money; it’s about creating freedom, access, and options. It’s about taking control of your future, securing your family’s legacy, and opening doors that have been closed for far too long.

When we step into investing spaces, we’re not just growing wealth for ourselves—we’re rewriting the narrative for the next generation. Our daughters, nieces, and mentees need to see us thriving in these spaces so they know what’s possible for them, too.

Getting Started: Steps to Break Into Investing

  1. Educate Yourself:
Start where you are. Read books, listen to podcasts, and join communities that cater to Black women stepping into wealth-building.
    • Books: Clever Girl Finance by Bola Sokunbi or Black Girl Finance by Selina Flavius.
    • Podcasts: Brown Ambition or The Courtney Sanders Podcast.
    • Community: Join my Facebook group, Wealthy Women Conversations, where women just like you are learning and thriving in these spaces.
  2. Start Small:
You don’t need to be rich to begin investing. Apps like Robinhood, Stash, or CashApp make it easy to start with as little as $5. The key is to build the habit and let your money grow over time.
  3. Explore Cryptocurrency:
Don’t let crypto intimidate you. While it may seem complex, platforms like Coinbase and Binance offer beginner-friendly tools to help you start. Learn about Bitcoin, Ethereum, and how these digital assets can diversify your portfolio.
  4. Research Real Estate:
Real estate isn’t just for millionaires. Start small by researching house-hacking (renting part of your home), investing in rental properties, or even joining real estate investment groups.
  5. Consistency is Key:
Building wealth takes time. Commit to investing regularly, whether it’s $50 a month or $500. The power of compound interest works best with consistency.

Overcoming Intimidation: A Personal Story

I remember walking into my first investing seminar and feeling completely out of place. As the only Black woman in the room, I could feel the stares, and I spent the first half of the session wondering if I even belonged there.

But then I reminded myself why I was there: to learn, grow, and claim my space. By the end of the seminar, I wasn’t just sitting quietly in the back. I was asking questions, taking notes, and leaving with a plan.

My first step was investing $50 in an index fund. Over time, I gained the confidence to buy individual stocks, explore real estate, and even dabble in cryptocurrency. Now I’m here to tell you: You belong in these spaces, too.

Wealth Whisper: Tips to Build Your Portfolio

  1. Start with Index Funds: These are a great way to enter the stock market with lower risk and instant diversification. Look into funds like the S&P 500.
  2. Don’t Overlook Crypto: Platforms like Coinbase and Binance offer easy ways to start investing in digital assets like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Educate yourself on the risks, but don’t let fear hold you back.
  3. Leverage Fractional Shares: Many apps allow you to buy portions of expensive stocks, so you don’t need $1,000 to invest in companies like Apple or Tesla.
  4. Set Automatic Investments: Apps like Acorns can automatically round up your purchases and invest the spare change, helping you grow your portfolio effortlessly.
  5. Track Your Progress: Tools like Personal Capital or Mint can help you keep an eye on your investments and net worth.

Building Wealth in Community

You don’t have to do this alone. Wealth-building is always stronger in community, and that’s why I created the Wealthy Women Conversations Facebook group. It’s a safe, empowering space where women just like you are sharing tips, resources, and encouragement to step boldly into investing.
